On this page we will provide some tips that can improve the performance of your computer and give you ideas that you can use with your system.

Computer Operations

Try not to open too many programs while working on your computer. The more programs that are open, the slower your system will run. Windows 95, 98 and Windows Me are generally less stable than other Windows operating systems such as  Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista and, now, Windows 7
Icons on the Windows taskbar in the lower right hand corner of your computer screen represent programs running in the background on your computer. The fewer programs running in the background, the better your computer should perform.

Maintenance Issues

Windows computers have a built-in disk error checking program . Windows 95, 98 and Windows Milenium Edition (Me) include the Scandisk disk error checking program. Windows NT, 2000, XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 have the Chkdsk (check disk) program. All operating systems, except Windows NT,  include a disk defragmentation utility (Defrag) which is a disk data reorganizing utility. Both utilities should be run occasionally to ensure the health of your computer and to warn of possible disk failure. The Windows Disk Cleanup utility is a useful tool to help keep your computer's hard drive free of unnecessary files and should be used regularly.

Broadband Internet

You are vulnerable to hackers and viruses with an "always on" high speed internet connection, such as Comcast cable or Verizon DSL. Updated anti-virus software, firewall software and anti-spyware software are essential components of secure computing.  Additionally, web content filtering software is also available to safeguard your family from offensive web content or to prevent employees from accessing inappropriate web content. These programs can be obtained either free or at little cost.

Do you unplug your home computer from its power source during an electrical storm? Do you unplug telephone wires to the modem and network cables during such storms?
If left 'plugged-in' your computer can suffer serious damage during electrical storms due to power surges and sudden power outages.
